Rio de Janeiro, Iguassu Falls, and Salvador

Brazilians say that God created the world in six days and, on the seventh, He created Rio. On first sight, this seems perfectly believable. This 'Marvelous City' as its inhabitants, the Cariocas, call it, is indeed one of the most beautiful and exciting cities in the world.

You’ll visit the colonial jewel of Paraty, surrounded by beautiful rugged beaches, numerous islands off the coast, parks with plantations and waterfalls. Founded in 1660, its colonial heritage is preserved in the form of elegant colonial Portuguese churches and houses in the relaxed, laid-back atmosphere of a town trapped contentedly in a time warp. Paraty has lots of bars, restaurants, shops and boutiques and is known for its delicious cuisine as well as being one of the principal cachaca (sugar cane spirits) distilling regions in Brazil.

You’ll check out two of Bahia’s treasures: Salvador, known for its history, culture and beauty; and Praia do Forte, a quaint fisherman village, known for its beaches, restaurants and artisan shops. The city of Salvador and the village of Praia do Forte are two destinations that will give you a glimpse of what the state of Bahia is all about. Bahia is one of the main destinations in Brazil and is known for its rich history, culture and unexplored nature.

You’ll also be visiting the Iguassu Falls. The Falls are considered to be one of the seven wonders of the modern world. Their beauty is unsurpassed.

Day 2
Today you'll be taken on a city tour to visit some of the most famous sites of Rio.  Driving on scenic roads through the Tijuca National Park, you’ll visit the principal hotspots:  the waterfalls, the Mayrink Chapel, and the view of the beautiful flora and fauna of the forest and the sounds of the Atlantic Forest birds.

The tour will take you across the top of the mountain in the direction of Corcovado.  After experiencing the panoramic 360º views from the top of the Corcovado (the Christ Statue), your next stop will be the neighborhood of Santa Teresa, a historical district of old Rio where artisans work and live.

Later we’ll end at Sugar Loaf, where you’ll be able to watch the magnificent sunset over the city and the bay.

Day 3
Today will see us off on a Favella (Shanty) tour.  Our guide will lead us through Rocina, the largest shantytown in Rio.  This tour is unforgettable.  After, we’ll head to visit the home of Pele, Maracana Stadium.  We have a churrasco dinner (Brazilian barbecue) planned before we head to the famous weekly Lapa street party at the Arches of Lapa.

Day 4
After breakfast you’ll be driven to Paraty (approximately a 3 hour drive).  After checking in and perhaps grabbing a bite to eat, you‘ll be taken on a private city tour of the principal churches, museums, old colonial houses and other points of cultural historical interest.

Day 5
Today, the Gold Trail awaits you after breakfast.  This tour begins by taking you to the panoramic points of the town followed by a visit to the different cachaca (sugar cane spirits) distilleries of Paraty.  After lunch, the tour then leads through the National Park where you will see different well-known waterfalls.

Day 6
Today your tour will be to some of the islands and beaches in the Bay of Paraty.  The beaches here are ideal for swimming and snorkeling, with calm, crystalline waters, and Atlantic rain forest vegetation.  Lunch is included at a restaurant at one of the stops.

Day 7
Today a driver will take you to the airport for your flight to Iguassu Falls.  After you arrive, you’ll be driven to your hotel.  After lunch you’ll be taken on a tour traveling the Macuco Trail in a rustic, open wagon, which allows you a view of the luxurious jungle in its splendor.

You’ll take a walk down the Iguassu Canyon Trail, visiting the picturesque Macuco Falls and enter the Brazilian jungle on foot to have more close contact with nature.  Finally, you’ll ride the rapids of the Iguassu Canyon in secure open boats.

Day 8
Today will comprise a full-day tour of both sides of the falls.  You’ll follow a trail inside the sub-tropical forest, which includes a visit to the bottom of Salto Floriano (Floriano Falls).  At the end of trail, an elevator will take you up to the top of the falls.  After your tour of the Brazilian side, there will be a break for lunch.  Then, you’ll be taken across the border into Argentina by private vehicle and into the Parque National del Iguazu.

Once in Argentina, you’ll go on a walking tour of the falls.  The views are magnificent, especially the one right on top of the Devil's Throat, which is reached by a little boat taking you through breathtaking scenery.

Throughout the day you will see numerous rainbows, hundreds of beautiful butterflies, lots of friendly little South American coatis, and dozens of exotic birds.

Day 9
Before checking out of your hotel, you may want to have one final look at the magnificent falls then be driven in a private vehicle to the airport for your flight to Salvador.  Once you arrive, a driver will pick you up at the airport and bring you to your apartment.   You may want to relax on the beach with a cold beer and sample the Bahian delights in the beach huts.  We suggest the shrimp on a stick, the smoked cheese, or the local favorite, acaraje.

By night, we’ll be having dinner at the Solar da União, also the venue of the Museum of Modern Art of Bahia, where you can enjoy Brazilian food and drinks during a folkloric show.  This show features an excellent presentation of local perspectives from capoeira to samba, ancient slave dances, and even a sample of candomblé, a religious rite typical in this region.

Day 10
After breakfast, you’ll begin your journey through Salvador visiting Pelourinho, the historical district of the city, followed by a delicious Bahian lunch.  Then you’ll visit the Mercado Modelo, a handicraft market that used to be the merchandise and slave-trading outpost of the city.  Here you can buy many handicrafts and local products.  Make sure you visit the dungeon below the market where the slaves were kept prior to sale.  Samba show by night.

Today we’ll head to what the locals regard as the best beach in Salvador:  Flamengo Beach.  Relax and take in the scenery.  We’ll have a typical Bahian meal called ‘moqueca’ which is fish and shrimp stew.  We’ll head back to town around sunset.

    2. 7 km Catamaran ride to the mouth of the River Sauipe, passing through beautiful areas of coastal rainforest vegetation and mangroves.  A specialist guide will tell you about the various ecosystems and you will have the opportunity to swim and do a bit of bird watching.

      Day 15
We suggest you take the morning to relax by the pool or on the beach and maybe do some last-minute shopping in the village for presents to take back home.  After lunch, you’ll be driven in a private, air-conditioned vehicle to the airport.
