Rio de Janeiro, Iguassu Falls, and Salvador

Brazilians say that God created the world in six days and, on the seventh, He created Rio. On first sight, this seems perfectly believable. This 'Marvelous City' as its inhabitants, the Cariocas, call it, is indeed one of the most beautiful and exciting cities in the world.

You’ll also visit the Iguassu Falls.  The Falls are considered to be one of the seven wonders of the modern world and their beauty is unsurpassed.

You’ll visit Salvador as well, Bahia’s capital.  The city is known for its history, culture and beauty, restaurants and artisan shops.  Salvador will give you a glimpse of what the northeastern state of Bahia has to offer in terms of rich history, culture and unexplored nature.

Day-by-day Itinerary

Day 1
You'll arrive in Rio and be met at the airport by a private driver who will take you to your apartment.  You’ll want to relax for a bit.  In the late afternoon, we’ll take a leisurely walk of Copacabana and Ipanema Beaches coming into sunset.  We’ll have a churrasco (Brazilian barbecue) for dinner.

Day 2
Today you'll be taken on a city tour to visit some of the most famous sites of Rio.  Driving on scenic roads through the Tijuca National Park, you’ll visit the principal hotspots:  the waterfalls, the Mayrink Chapel, and the view of the beautiful flora and fauna of the forest and the sounds of the Atlantic Forest birds.

The tour will take you across the top of the mountain in the direction of Corcovado.  After experiencing the panoramic 360º views from the top of the Corcovado (the Christ Statue), your next stop will be the neighborhood of Santa Teresa, a historical district of old Rio where artisans work and live.

Later we’ll end at Sugar Loaf, where you’ll be able to watch the magnificent sunset over the city and the bay.

Day 3
Morning van ride to the docks where a schooner will be off to visit the idyllic Ilha Grande (Big Island).  Upon arrival, use the map to guide through 16 different signposted trails leading through the lush forest to several of the islands 102 beaches.  Seemingly endless picturesque beaches with some good surfing waves are considered by some to be the most beautiful in Brazil.  Snorkeling, laying on the beach, wandering the rain forest, whatever you'd like to do.  Boat heads back at sunset.

Day 4
In the morning, a private driver will take you to the airport for your flight to Salvador.  Once you’ve landed in Salvador, a private driver will pick you up at the airport and bring you to your apartment.  You may want to relax on the beach with a cold beer and sample the Bahian delights in the beach huts.  We suggest the shrimp on a stick, the smoked cheese, or the local favorite, acaraje.

By night, we’ll have typical Bahian cuisine called ‘moqueca’, which is fish and shrimp stew, for dinner at the Solar da União, also the venue of the Museum of Modern Art of Bahia, where you can enjoy Brazilian food and drinks during a folkloric show.  This show features an excellent presentation of local perspectives from capoeira to samba, ancient slave dances, and even a sample of candomblé, a religious rite typical in this region.

Day 5
After breakfast, you’ll begin your journey through Salvador visiting Pelourinho, the historical district of the city, followed by a delicious Bahian lunch.  Then you’ll visit the Mercado Modelo, a handicraft market that used to be the merchandise and slave-trading outpost of the city.  Here you can buy many handicrafts and local products.  Make sure you visit the dungeon below the market where the slaves were kept prior to sale.  Samba show by night.

Day 6
You’ll be driven to the airport in the morning to flight to Foz do Iguacu.  After you arrive, you’ll be driven to your hotel.  After lunch you’ll be taken on a tour traveling the Macuco Trail in a rustic, open wagon, which allows you a view of the luxurious jungle in its splendor.

You’ll take a walk down the Iguassu Canyon Trail, visiting the picturesque Macuco Falls and enter the Brazilian jungle on foot to have more close contact with nature.  Finally, you’ll ride the rapids of the Iguassu Canyon in secure open boats.

Day 7
Today will comprise a full-day tour of both sides of the falls.  You’ll follow a trail inside the sub-tropical forest, which includes a visit to the bottom of Salto Floriano (Floriano Falls).  At the end of trail, an elevator will take you up to the top of the falls.  After your tour of the Brazilian side, there will be a break for lunch.  Then, you’ll be taken across the border into Argentina by private vehicle, and into the Parque National del Iguazu.

Once in Argentina, you’ll go on a walking tour of the falls.  The views are magnificent, especially the one right on top of the Devil's Throat, which is reached by a little boat taking you through breathtaking scenery.

Throughout the day you will see numerous rainbows, hundreds of beautiful butterflies, lots of friendly little South American coatis, and dozens of exotic birds.

Day 8
Before checking out of your hotel, you may want to have one final look at the magnificent falls then be driven in a private vehicle to the airport.
